There
are around 15 wholesale traders selling broomsticks in Karimnagar town
at the busy Gunj commercial area. Before the launch of the Swachh Bharath campaign, it was only the municipal authorities who would
purchase the coconut broomsticks. Each shop would sell around 2,000
broomsticks a month. Now, the sales have crossed 5,000-10,000 a month,
traders say.
The Swachh Bharath programme launched by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has come as a blessing in disguise for traders
selling broomsticks here. Over the past one month, there has been a
steady rise in the sale of broomsticks in Karimnagar town.
The
cleanliness drive had slowly gained momentum in the town with the
participation of various organizations, including State and Central
government employees, banks, educational institutions, medical
fraternity, voluntary organizations and others. Subsequently, the sale
of broomsticks also increased, with the participation of more people.
“We are really happy that the sale of
broomsticks has risen steadily due to the ongoing Swachh Bharath program,” said Sridhar, a trader in Gunj area. “Earlier, I would sell
100-odd broomsticks a day. Now, the sales cross more than 400 a day,
with several organizations and institutions purchasing them for
participation in the cleanliness drive,” he added.
Another
trader, Sampath, said he was ordering more broomsticks from Palakollu
of West Godavari district, which supplies the coconut broomsticks to the
district. “The Swachh Bharath campaign has made our business very
prosperous,” he said, adding that the sale of face masks and hand gloves
have also increased.
The Municipal Corporation of
Karimnagar (MCK) had purchased a whopping 10,000 broomsticks from a shop
in Karimnagar town for the mass cleanliness program that was taken up
on Saturday.
